Hamburg/Germany
December 2010
With a lifting capacity of a total of 2,000 mtons and a speed of 20 knots, it’s the world’s largest heavy lift vessel to date: SAL puts the first of two new buildings of Type 183 into service. On December 9, the heavy lift vessel was christened at the "Überseebrücke" bridge in its home port of Hamburg.
After the christening, Captain Rüdiger Bauer took over the ship, which embarked on its first mission the next morning, heading in the direction of the Baltic Sea. Once it has transported heavy cranes and machinery from Europe to the Far East, it will then head for the coast of Norway carrying complex drilling templates designed for use on the sea bed in connection with oil and gas extraction for offshore oil exploration along the Norwegian coast.
The offshore energy sector – including oil, gas and wind – will be one of the core segments of employment for this highly specialized vessel.

November 2010
Hamburg, Germany
After a six months building phase, the first of two new buildings of type 183 reaches its date of delivery. In July 2009, SAL commissioned the design and construction of a highly innovative vessel type to the Sietas shipyard. In close cooperation between carrier and shipyard, the type 183 was developed – a prototype that so far remains unique in the global market with a combined crane capacity of 2,000 mtons SWL and a Dynamic Positioning System (DP). The high capacity cranes have been manufactured by Neuenfelder Maschinenfabrik (NMF), a company belonging to the Sietas group.
The crane tests of the two massive cranes were performed successfully on November 20 at the Norderwerft in Hamburg. In only 30 minutes, the two cranes managed to lift simultaneously 1,000 mtons pontoons each. With 2,000 tons weight hanging from the crane, the vessel itself was in ballast with only the tweendeck pontoons filled with water to provide stability. Only a few days earlier, the cranes were tested successfully lifting weights of 1,100 mtons individually.
Besides their unrivalled lifting capacity, the NMF cranes are characterized by their significant outreach, which allows each crane to lift up to 500 mtons even at a distance of 38 m. Further features of the new vessel type are its high speed of 20 knots, adjustable tween decks and a Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning System.
The naming ceremony will follow on December 9 at 15:00 hrs at the Überseebrücke in Hamburg.

Rostock (Germany) / Barrow-in-Furness (UK)
March to June 2010
From March 2010 to June 2010, SAL's vessel MV "Annette" performed 11 consecutive voyages between Rostock and Barrow-in-Furness for the Walney Offshore Project Phase I. In the course of the project, the vessel transported 51 monopiles with a weight between 480 mtons and 550 mtons and dimensions of up to 55 m x 6 m. With a high speed of 20 knots, the vessel was able to perform the roundtrip between Germany and UK within 10 days and with that accommodated the time-sensitive schedule for SAL's Danish client DONG energy.

Port Hedland / WA
June to August 2010
Between June and August 2010, SAL performed four voyages from Nantong / China to Port Hedland / Western Australia for the RGP5 project.
SAL flexibly mobilized four heavy lift ships in order to carry the cargo of over 90,000 freight tons to the site in Port Hedland.
SAL’s vessels of Type 161A transported three times 10 modules and one time 8 modules with only seven days transit time from China to Australia. The modules will be used for iron ore processing in Australia’s largest Mineral Port for its major export commodity, iron ore.

Hamburg, Germany
In December 2010, SAL expects the delivery of the first type 183 new building from the Sietas shipyard. The second new building will be delivered by March 2011. This innovative ship type will be the first heavy lift vessel in the market featuring 2 x 1,000 mtons SWL cranes while maintaining a high speed of 20 knots. To provide you with an insight on the progress of the building process, you will find a video on the starting page of our website on each 15th of the month up to the completion of the vessel.

June 17, 2010
New Delhi, India
SAL's MV "Annemieke" has been selected for the Indian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Award 2009. The award was presented by the Chairman of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board during the 9th NMSAR board meeting in New Delhi.
On 17 December 2009, Capt. Klaus Lang and his crew rescued 13 Indian seafarers from their drifting life raft. 120 km from the Indian coast, Capt. Lang received a distress call of a listing Dhau. Actually being on her way to Malaysia, MV "Annemieke" turned back as she was only 40 minutes away from the vessel. On arrival, the SAL crew first were asked for a pump, which was brought over to the Dhau. When the pump turned out to be of no use on the leaking Dhau, the Indian crew stepped into a life raft, which began to drift out fast into the open sea. Due to darkness and haste, it hadn't been fastened to the Dhau. Finally - 6 hours after the emergency call - MV "Annemieke" could
take the 13 seamen on board.

Newcastle, Australia
May 2010
SAL was contracted by SVITZER to transport two brand-new tug boats of 500 mtons each from Gothenburg / Sweden to Newcastle / Australia. Usually the tugs would sail with own steam, but utilizing a heavy lift vessel for transportation is more cost-effective and four times faster in transit time.
In close cooperation with the client, SAL designed and manufactured a cradle in a very short time in order to guarantee a seaworthy shipment on SAL's MV "Annegret". The two SVITZER tugs were discharged at Newcastle's new project and general cargo berth Mayfield No. 4. During the discharging, the pier was christened by the NSW Minister for Ports and Waterways, Mr. Paul McLeay.

Dahej, India
June 2010
In early June 2010, MV "Regine" discharged two Liebherr Rail Mounted Cranes LPS 600 under severest weather conditions in Dahej. Dahej Port is one of the most challenging ports in the world with a tidal range of approx. 10 meters. The monsoon month of June also complicates discharging with a current of almost 7 knots and a wind speed of about 30 knots.
MV "Regine", one of the latest SAL new buildings, successfully placed the cranes directly on the pier rails constructed by Adani Port. This feat could be realized only with the professional expertise of the SAL crew and technical department and, in the run-up, with months of planning by the SAI Maritime team. Moreover, the Adani/Liebherr team was very helpful in making the project a grand success. The LPS 600 cranes – the first of their kind ever imported to India –, will handle mainly bulk cargoes at Dahej.

Kandla, India
March 2010
On 1st March 2010, SAL’s MV "Anne-Sofie" discharged three reactors of 703 mtons (36.45 x 8.5 x 6.8 m), 724 mtons (32.30 x 8.5 x 6.9 m) and 848 mtons (37.40 x 8.5 x 7.15 m) at Kandla Port. The reactors, which were manufactured by Larsen & Toubro at their Hazira Manufacturing Complex, were brought from Hazira to Mumbai on barge and transshipped onto the SAL vessel at Mumbai inner anchorage.
Intensive planning meetings between all involved parties ensured a smooth load out and discharge operation. The challenge of receiving the three heavy lifts in 24 hours at Kandla was indeed a mammoth task, keeping in mind the tidal range and restriction to berth. However, this was accomplished in less than 24 hours, thanks to the advance planning on board of MV "Anne-Sofie" by the master and crew who had rigged the first heavy lift for discharge even prior vessels berthing in order to save time.

Rio de Janeiro
January, 2010
SAL has successfully completed the loading, transportation and transfer of offshore equipment for the Brazilian Peregrino Project. The array of cargo included a 630 mtons STP buoy, anchor chains, anchor piles and reels. At the end of September, SAL’s MV "Trina" loaded the equipment in Singapore. Due to the height of the buoy – 18 m –, the vessel sailed to Rio de Janeiro with an open hatch. On-site, the SAL vessel was not only used as a means of transportation but also as a storage unit for the supply vessel serving the oil field.
