Setting record: sea transport of biggest stinger ramps worldwide

Rotterdam, Netherlands – Singapore
April 2012

SAL was awarded to transport the largest stinger ramps ever built from Rotterdam to Singapore. MV “Annette” carried out this challenging shipment in April 2012. For the oversized cargo with a unit weight of up to 880 mtons and dimensions of up to 42.50 × 15.10 × 18.00 m, SAL’s engineering department designed a complex understructure for weight distribution on deck. What’s more, both engineering and manufacturing of the weight spreading system had to be done in a very short time. The stinger ramps where then loaded and discharged by floating crane.

In Singapore, the stinger ramps will be assembled by Keppel Shipyard in order to complete the building of MV “Castorone”, which will become the world’s largest pipe laying vessel.

TLS tower from Singapore to the Netherlands

Singapore – Flushing, Netherlands
March 2012

In March 2012, SAL’s MV “Frauke” performed a shipment of a TLS (Tiltable Lay System) tower from Singapore to Flushing for Subsea 7 – Offshore Resources. The unit with a weight of abt. 450 mtons measured 18.86 × 10.34 × 33.00 m. Despite the extraordinary height of the TLS tower, SAL offered to lift the piece in its fully assembled state. For this purpose, SAL’s engineering division had to develop a precise lifting and rigging arrangement, because there was very narrowed space between lifting beam and tower. Also, the crew had to perform an accurate job while rigging the tower due to very limited space. To support the big loads on the hatch cover beams, the engineering team designed a complex grillage as well as a sea-fastening system as it was not allowed to do any lashings on the cargo. The TLS tower was fastened to the grillage with a pin connec tion only. Due to that, the lowering of the tower had to be performed with utmost precision in order to get all pins properly inserted.
